Microscopic flea anatomy. 17th-century artwork of observations of a flea made through a microscope by English natural philosopher Robert Hooke (1635-1703). Fleas are wingless insects that are a vector for various diseases. The first practical microscopes were developed in the 17th-century. Hooke published detailed drawings of observations made with his microscopes in 'Micrographia' (1665).
