Glaciology research. Researchers inserting a probe into the Tete Rousse Glacier in the French Alps. This probe is being used to assess the size and threat posed by a pocket of meltwater accumulating under the glacier. Such pockets of subglacial meltwater can rupture and devastate settlements in the valleys below. Such a rupture in 1892 caused a debris flow that killed 175 people. Some of the water was pumped out in 2010, but the subglacial meltwater pocket is kept under surveillance, with readings showing that it is filling again. Photographed in July 2012.
