Cased set of three trocars and cannulae. Trocars which have a sharp, three edged point at one end and are passed through the cannula (hollow tube) for insertion into blood vessels or body cavities. These were used in nineteenth century surgery to drain build up of fluids or gas within the body and subsequently relieve pressure. Three trocars of different sizes are shown in their case. The handles are made of ebony and finished with a cross hatched detail. This set is English and dates from around 1860.
