Cased cupping set dating from 1850, England. The set comprises of a scarificator, glass cups, spirit burner, and a tincture bottle. This set would have been used in a procedure called 'wet cupping', a form of bloodletting was used in the nineteenth century to 'treat' a range of ailments. The scarificator is used to cut the skin, then the cup would be placed over the wound. A vacuum is created within the cupping vessel using a flame, the resulting suction would draw blood out of the surface of the skin through the wound.
