William Camden (1551-1623), English antiquarian, historian and pioneer of archaeology. Camden's surveys of Roman and prehistoric sites in England, including the first study of Stonehenge, were presented in 'Britannia', published in Latin in 1586 and in English in 1610. He also wrote 'Annals', a study of Elizabeth I's reign. Camden taught at Westminster school for 23 years and endowed the Camden professorship of history at Cambridge University. The inscription refers to his role as Clarenceux King of Arms at the College of Arms in London, and in the portrait he is wearing his tabard and chain of office. Artwork from the 1695 edition of 'Britannia'.
