A mediaeval Hospice from "an old woodcut". The date & source are unknown. The illustration shows one patient having a back massage, or scrub (left), another a hair wash (centre) & the third seated gentleman is having his shoulders cupped (right). Cupping was a procedure used to draw out bad influences from the body. There were two approaches, dry & wet cupping. A glass was heated & clapped tightly over the patient's shoulders. A vacuum was produced, causing the skin to swell up into the glass & the blood to rush into the small capillaries. Wet cupping occurred when the skin was first cut. Up to the 13th century hospitals were under the control of the church.
