Dendritic mineral crystals. Dendritic (tree-like, branching) crystals of manganese and iron oxides in Solnhofen limestone. This Jurassic rock is from Solnhofen, Germany. The crystals form when water containing dissolved minerals percolates along fractures and bedding planes. This specimen is 26 centimetres across.
