Dedicated to Saint Domnius, the first bishop of nearby Salona, the city's cathedral was once the mausoleum of the Roman emperor Diocletian who had had Domnius put to death in 304 AD. When his body disappeared mysteriously 170 years later, the building was converted into a cathedral and dedicated to the man Diocletian himself had martyred.
