Eduard Arning (1855-1936). Historical illustration of the English-German microbiologist and physician Eduard Arning infecting Keanu, a murderer condemned to death, with leprosy on 30th September 1884. Arning is best known for his medical studies done at the leper colony on Molokai, Hawaii, from 1884-1886. He purposefully infected Keanu with leprosy by suturing a leproma the size of a hen's egg into an incision in the man's arm.
