Minnitt's Nitrous Oxide and Air Analgesia Apparatus, 1933. This machine delivered a mix of nitrous oxide (an anaesthetic gas) and air to a patient to provide analgesia (pain relief). It was developed by Robert James Minnitt (1889-1974) to provide pain relief for women in labour, and could be carried by midwives to women's homes. Gas and air are still used for pain relief in childbirth, dental procedures and emergency medicine today.
