Australian funnel-web spider (Hadronyche valida) being milked for venom. This spider is used for spider venom research. Tweezers applied to squeeze the chelicerae cause the spider to release droplets of venom from the tips of its fangs. The liquid is collected by pipette. The venom is being studied as a possible source of novel anti-cancer drugs. Spiders are milked like this once a month. Photographed at the Australian Institute for Tropical Health and Medicine, James Cook University, Cairns, Queensland, Australia.
