Lauder Brunton (1844-1916), Scottish physician. Brunton studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh. He then studied in Europe, returning to the UK to work in London at University College, and then St Bartholomew's Hospital. His research focused on drugs used to treat heart conditions, and he is best known for his use of amyl nitrite to relax the coronary arteries and treat angina pectoris. Brunton was elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 1874. He gave the Society's Goulstonian Lecture (1877) and Croonian Lecture (1889). He was knighted in 1900 and made a baronet in 1908. This artwork, by Sidney Kent, was published in 1905.
