This rocket-powered aircraft was the first plane to reach Mach 3 - three times the speed of sound - on 27the September 1956. Unfortunately there was a problem as the aircraft turned back towards Edwards Air Force Base, USA, and began tumbling out of control. The plane crashed and the pilot, Captain Milburn Apt, did not survive.
