Cushing's syndrome is caused by exposure to high levels of the hormone cortisol. This can be through taking glucocortinoid drugs, or diseases that result in excess cortisol production. Here, the condition has caused myopathy - where the muscle fibres do not function, resulting in muscular weakness.
