Prehistoric cave paintings, some from 40000 years ago (the Upper Paleolithic or Late Stone Age) have been found all over the world. This image illustrates prehistoric man painting an image of a bison onto a cave wall and similar to the paintings found in the Cave of Altamira, Cantabria, Spain, which are believed to be 16000 to 14000 old, possibly even 36000 years old. The paintings may have been made to enhance hunting of animals. The pigments that were used included haematite, charcoal and ochre.
