Hole in the heart. Gross clinical specimen of a human heart showing a hole between the atria, or atrial septal defect. This is a congenital defect. A septal defect may cause enlargement of the heart and pulmonary artery, and problems with blood pressure and the heart valves. It may result in heart failure, but can be corrected with surgery.
