Dormant bare-root trees and plants should be planted in in their permanent position as soon as possible after receiving them. If this is not possible it is best to heel-in the trees in a V-shaped trench wide and deep enough to accommodate the plants' roots and long enough to prevent crowding. These English yew hedge plants (taxus baccata) are being temporarily placed in the trench at an angle, making sure their roots are below ground level, and then well covered with soil. In the UK, bare-root plants can be planted at any time during the dormant season, usually from mid November to mid March.
