Azurite crystals, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Azurite is a hydrated copper carbonate mineral. Its name refers to its colour, azure. In medieval times, the mineral was ground up and used by painters as a blue pigment. Azurite's colour also makes it popular with mineral collectors. Magnification: x67, when printed 10cm wide.
