Light microscopy of cirrhosis of the liver. Much of the normally highly cellular liver tissue has been replaced with excessive fibrotic (scar) tissues stained brown-black. Most of the normal lobules of liver cells (hepatocytes) have been destroyed leaving islands or nodules of liver cells (orange) that have regenerated in response to cell damage. Common causes of cirrhosis are excessive alcohol consumption and chronic hepatitis. The disease is irreversible and may lead to liver carcinoma. Magnification x15 when printed at 10 cm.
