Sperm whale tissue analysis. Tissue sample from a dead sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) embedded in paraffin wax being sliced by a microtome. The thin slices allow scientists to study the specimen under a microscope. The tissue sample came from a dead male sperm whale that was found on Henne Strand, Jutland, Denmark. The specimen measured 14 meters in length and weighed an estimated 30 tonnes. Photographed at theNational Veterinary Institute in Copenhagen.
