A plant of the grape hyacinth, Muscari armenaicum, a member of the family Liliaceae. The picture shows a bulb (a swollen underground bud), rooted at its base, producing a small offset bulb ( swelling, to bottom left of the bulb). Arising from the bulb is a rosette of linear leaves with parallel venation, typical of monocotyledonous plants. In the centre of the leaf rosette, the flowering stem has a developing infloresecence in the form of a raceme ( flowers on individual stalks, the youngest towards the apex). M. armenaicum is a native of SE Europe, but is widely grown in gardens as the common Grape Hyacinth. Its ability to reproduce by offset bulbs and by seed means that in a garden it may become invasive.
