Penicillium fungus and bacterial colonies cultured in a petri dish. The antibiotic penicillin is derived from Penicillium mould. Penicillin drugs can kill bacteria and inhibit their growth, and are used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. However many bacteria have developed resistance, due to inappropriate and widespread use of these drugs.
