In some places, the ground in the geothermal region of Dallol in the Danakil desert, Ethiopia, is covered in curious eggshell-like formations. These are products of the hot mineral gases released from the salty subsoil. When the hot gases come into contact with the cooler air, the minerals crystallize to form these blisters around the exit holes. Sulphur and iron compounds give them the yellow colour.
