The fuchsia flower on the right consists of two separate flowers which have fused together, having two ovaries, sepals, styles and stigmas, all on one stem. This outcome may have resulted from fasciation, in which there has been abnormal activity in the growing tip of the plant. The cause could be random genetic mutation, hormonal imbalance, or external factors including viruses, bacteria, fungi or damage to the plant by frost, insects, chemical or mechanical injury. Fasciation is an unpredictable random occurrence usually limited to a single stem.
