Chloride channel and ivermectin complex. Computer model showing the structure of a glutamate-gated chloride channel from a parasitic nematode worm (Caenorhabditis elegans). This protein (red) is found in post-synaptic neuron membranes. Neurotransmitters bind to the upper portion and trigger a conformational change in the receptor that opens the chloride channel, dampening neuronal excitability. Ivermectin is an antiparasite drug. It is an allosteric agonist that opens chloride ion channels. It binds in the transmembrane domain of the receptor and stabilises the open-pore conformation.
