Fatal London Underground accident. Illustration of the death of British colonial administrator Sir Donald Friell McLeod (1810-1872). He arrived at Gloucester Road underground station (Metropolitan Line) on 28 November 1872 and fell while attempting to enter a moving steam train. His left arm and both legs were nearly severed and he died at St George's Hospital later that day. This Punjab-style watercolour from around 1885 commemorates McLeod who was venerated in the Punjab where he was Lieutenant-Governor from 1865 to 1870. At upper left, are Sikh ascetics and the Akali military order, with McLeod borne away on a palanquin.
