Ingolstadt map gores. 16th-century set of 12 map gores (arranged horizontally and interleaved) showing the geography of the Earth according to an unknown German cartographer from Ingolstadt in 1518. This map contains an early use of the name America to refer to the New World, honouring the supposed discoverer of the continent, Amerigo Vespucci. The name 'America' is shown at upper right. This 1879 Austro-Hungarian republication is titled 'Zweiter gedruckter Globus' (Second Printed Globe). The German text across top incorrectly refers to the work as being from 'Cosmographicus liber' (1524) by German scholar Petrus Apianus. The place names are in Latin.
