Atom bomb testing clean-up, 1970s. US Air Force Technical Sergeant using a Geiger counter to checks radiation levels on the island of Runit during a clean-up of Eniwetok Atoll in the Marshall Islands in the Pacific. This atoll had been one of the sites used by the USA in the 1950s for an extensive series of atom bomb tests. Decontamination was carried out here between 1977 and 1980, with contaminated soil and debris mixed with concrete and buried in an atomic blast crater on Runit island, with a concrete dome erected over the crater. Photographed on 1 April 1978.
