A sedimentary discordance shows bedding planes at an angle to each other. It is formed when sedimentary layers, originally horizontal, are warped or become inclined by tectonic forces, later to be overlain by a new cycle of deposition. Such discordances are an illustration of the large-scale cyclic events as they play a continuing role in geology. Subsidence creates marine depositional basins in which sequences of sedimentary rocks are formed. A next phase of tectonic uplift raises these rocks into mountains. Next a similar cycle repeats itself, erosion, subsidence, sedimentation, uplift. The example here seen shows inclined beds of chalk overlain by a flat stratum of coarse conglomerates.
