The locations (red dots) and inflammatory conditions are: the fallopian tubes (salpingitis); the abdominal lining, or peritoneum (peritonitis); the urethra (urethritis); the vagina (vaginitis); the cervix, or neck of the uterus (cervicitis); and the uterine lining, or endometrium (endometritis). Inflammation of the final part of the rectum (proctitis) can be caused by gonorrhoea but is not part of pelvic inflammatory disease.
