Pelvic inflammatory disease. Illustration of a sagittal section through the female urogenital region, showing sites of inflammation (red dots) due to untreated gonorrhoea that has caused pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). This can cause sterility. The locations (red dots) and inflammatory conditions are: the fallopian tubes (salpingitis); the abdominal lining, or peritoneum (peritonitis); the urethra (urethritis); the vagina (vaginitis); the cervix, or neck of the uterus (cervicitis); and the uterine lining, or endometrium (endometritis). Inflammation of the final part of the rectum (proctitis) can be caused by gonorrhoea but is not part of pelvic inflammatory disease.
