Mount Sharp, on Mars, obtained by NASA's Curiosity rover. This image has been adjusted to look approximately as it would on Earth to aid geologists in interpreting rock type. About 3 kilometres in front of the rover is a ridge containing lots of the iron oxide haematite. Beyond that is a plain rich in clay minerals, and beyond that hills rich in sulphate minerals. The changing minerals suggest changing environments on early Mars, but suggests that all involved exposure to water.
