Mars and its moons. Computer artwork showing the planet Mars with its moons Phobos and Deimos, one in the foreground and one in the distance. Phobos is the innermost and larger of the two Martian satellites. Phobos (meaning fear) orbits Mars in under 8 hours. Deimos (meaning terror) is the outer moon, orbiting Mars in around 30 hours. Both Phobos and Deimos are thought to be asteroids captured by the gravity of Mars. The moons were discovered in 1877, by the American astronomer Asaph Hall.
