Hiatus hernia. X-ray of a patient with a sliding hiatus hernia. A hernia is the protrusion of an organ, or the fascia of an organ, through the wall of the cavity that normally contains it. In hiatus hernia (Mallory-Weiss syndrome) the stomach pushes up into the oesophagus (gullet).
