Yardangs on Mars, satellite image. Yardangs are streamlined hills that are carved by wind erosion from bedrock. The rock must be sufficiently erodible for wind to pick up poorly-consolidated pieces or scrape the surface by blowing sand. These yardangs are in an area on Mars called Gordii Dorsum. This image, published in 2014, was obtained by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) instrument on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) satellite.
