Kamchatka Peninsula phytoplankton bloom. Satellite image centred on the Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia, showing massive blooms of microscopic plant-like organisms called phytoplankton (green) in the surrounding waters (blue). The phytoplankton appear green due to the presence of chlorophyll within their cells. Kamchatka lies along the Pacific 'Ring of Fire,' an area of extremely active volcanism and plate tectonic earthquakes. Imaged by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA's Aqua satellite, on 23rd May 2013.
