Osaka Bay. Satellite image of Osaka Bay (blue), Japan, showing Kansai Airport (KIX, lower right) and the Kansai metropolitan area (grey), including the ports of Osaka, Kobe, Nishinomiya, Sakai, Amagasaki, and Hannan. Osaka Bay lies at the northeastern end of the Seto Inland Sea. Opened in 1994, KIX was a modern engineering marvel, built entirely as an artificial island and linked to the mainland by a 3.7 km long bridge. Because the site is built upon compacted fill, it suffers from subsidence, sinking 2-4 cm each. Imaged by the ASTER (Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer) instrument onboard NASA's Terra satellite, on 19th September 2003.
