Cheek squamous cell. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of detail from a squamous (flattened) skin cell from the inside of the cheek. Also known as buccal squamous cells, these are often collected for use in DNA tests. The cell surface is covered in fold-like extension of cytoplasm (microplicae) providing more surface area and adhesion to surface fluid layers. Magnification: x10'000 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
