Evora; Portugal; column in charnel house (in Portuguese; Capela dos Ossos). The charnel is housed on the grounds of the monastery of San Francisco; and in terms of physical size (over 20 by 10 meters); it is the largest on a church or monastery property in Europe. Formerly a dormitory; it was converted to a charnel by at least the 17th century; if not earlier. It contains the remains of an estimated 5000 people; and it is a popular local tourist attraction; drawing on average 150000 visitors a year. Photo 2010.
