Photographer Harold Chapman recalls... In a tiny narrow dark street not far from the Beat Hotel was a strange shop. In the window were lots of portraits of people, torn from magazines and newspapers. Behind them were empty shelves - what could this shop be selling? I tried to go in several times but it was always shut. I asked a passerby, "What does this shop sell?" Giggling, the old lady said, "Reincarnations! It is as simple as that! She doesn't get many customers nowadays. If you want to know who you are reincarnated from, the lady there will look at your face and look through her vast collection for a fee and tell you. She's got masses of pictures out of old papers and magazines, she picks bins! Ha! ha! ha!" In the window were famous personalities like Johnny Hallyday along with historical figures and saint-like and religious iconography. Underneath the window was a metal door with holes for ventilation. This was for the delivery of wood or coal to the cellar under the shop. 6e arrondissement, Left Bank, Paris, France, 1963.
