Les Halles at night. A fruit wholesaler is outside his store with his attractive display of open fruit boxes that he has carefully placed in the light of the street lamp. Inside the storehouse are neatly stacked crates going right up to ceiling height. The central food market of Les Halles was a sprawling area, known as the Quartier des Halles, with covered streets and through roads linking the pavilions, wholesale stores in side streets away from the pavilions, and a chaos of stalls, wholesale produce dealers and retailers, filling roads and narrow streets at night that had to be cleared by the time the ordinary working day was about to begin. 1er arrondissement, Right Bank, Paris, France, circa 1960s.
