Les Halles at around half past six in the morning in the area known as the carreau forain. On the corner of Rue du Pont Neuf with Rue de Rivoli, a market trader is hoping to sell his goods in the street and has a glut of unsold cauliflowers. The vegetable seller has his pitch set up in front of a shop called A L'Horloge du Pont Neuf which sells among other things Swiss watches such as Suizex. The outdoor clock helpfully gives the time of day. The shop's shutters are down. Photographer Harold Chapman recalls that market traders "just set up the food for sale in the street. When there was a glut of vegetables the place was full of unsold fresh produce which was then cleared away by bulldozers and wagon trains at 7 a.m. to be disposed of and the roadway cleared for through traffic. Market traders occupying the pavements and roads would be gone and all was cleared up in the street before the shops opened. The general smell in the market was very pleasant - country smells, fresh vegetables, perfume, frying smells - frites - chips with everything..." Carreau forain, Quartier des Halles, 1er arrondissement, Right Bank, Paris, France, circa 1960s.
