The Lander brothers (Richard and John), after landing at Badagry. John Lander (1807-1839) was the younger brother of Cornish explorer Richard Lemon Lander and accompanied him on his first expedition to western Africa. 'They came ashore from His Majesty's brig Clinker dressed in baggy Turkish trousers, bright loose-fitting gowns, and sporting a pair of enormous straw hats, each as large as an umbrella. The local girls found the sight so extraordinary that they turned aside to conceal their giggles.' The African Adventure - A History of Africa's Explorers by Timothy Severin, page 131.
