From an early period the Sienese sports were varied by bullfights, pageants, tourneys, mock battles, real battles and these races for riderless barberi along the streets. Sienese horses were said to be able to gallop scossi, without jockeys, as well as mounted; certainly these are not hung about with the Roman and Florentine goads (compare pp.101, 194).
