Crewmen of the Soviet Spy ship Laptev wave and snap pictures as the vessel approached to within 80 yards of a navy support ship, the USS Observation Island. The approach was made after the US nuclear submarine James Madison successfully launched the Poseidon missiles for the first time from underwater. An American destroyer escort made the Laptev keep 3,000 yards away from the launching. The Soviet ship later made an unsuccessful attempt to retrieve launch debris.
