The highest powered turbine-generators on the CEGB system are the two 550MW units at Thorpe Marsh power station, officially opened today. The photograph shows the AEI multi-cylinder cross-compound turbine-generator arranged on two axes. Until the 660MW single axes units now under manufacture come into service in the 1970s, the Thorpe Marsh machines will be the largest in operation in the United Kingdom.
