Despite the advance of radio, dogs are still being trained by the Polish army to play their part in war. Mainly Alsations and Airedales, the dogs are given patient training for several months and then sent out work with the troops. Harnessed to small carts they are taught to take ammunition and food up to the front lines, to worm their way with messages through barbed wire, and to carry pigeons for use in areas where even they would not be able to penetrate. The signals section also uses the dogs to lay out its telephone wires. Perhaps their most hazardous task is to carry their loads up and down ladders.
