Sir Alexander Cadogan appointed permanent head of Foreign Office, in succession to Sir Robert Vansittart. The Hon Sir Alexander Cadogan, Deputy Under Secretary at the Foreign Office, has been appointed to succeed Sir Robert Vansittart as Permanent Head of the department. Sir Robert has been transferred to the new post of Chief Diplomatic Adviser to the Government. Sir Alexander is 53 years of age. A son of the fifth Earl of Cadogan, he was formerly Ambassador at Peking. His new post carries a salary of 瞿3000, an increase of 瞿800. The changes have been undertaken to relieve pressure on Foreign Office personnel. The Post of Permanent Head is one of the most important in the entire British Civil Service, the holder having much to do with the directional Britain's foreign policy. The Permanent Head remains in office, though Foreign Ministers may come and go with successive Cabinet changes.
