Royal Spectators Watch Village Cricket Match Seated among the spectators at the village cricket field at Mersham-le-Hatch, near Ashford, Kent, are the Duke of Edinburgh (on ground wearing sun-glasses), Princess Elizabeth (in deck chair beside him), Lady Brabourne (right, in deck chair) and Lord Brabourne (on ground beside her). The Duke was waiting to bat for Mersham in a match against the neighbouring village of Aldington. He was out l.b.w. to the first ball he received, but he took three of the Aldington wickets for 27 runs. The Duke's team won by 38 runs. The Duke and Princess Elizabeth were spending the weekend with Lord and Lady Brabourne at their Mersham home. 31st July 1949
