Punch or the Parisian Charivari March 1878 Punch's subtitle of The London Charivari was a reference to the famous French satirical newspaper, Le Charivari: " .......an illustrated newspaper published in Paris, France from 1832 to 1937. Small caption says: Bitte hier abschneiden (cut off here In 1878 the Parisian "Charivari" published this drawing. The caption, with a few minor alterations, is still true for today: "Are you now for Italy?" - "No" - "For Russia?" - "No" - "For Turkey?" - "No, I am only for myself." Possible reference to Treaty of San Stefano (1978) peace settlement imposed on the Ottoman government by Russia at the end of the Russia-Turkish War. Opposed by Austria-Hungary and Britain, modified at the Congress of Berlin. 固opFoto
