Machette in hand, Farmer James Lee, who recently drove a tractor to Buckingham Palace, invites bailiffs to test the keenness of the blade when they attempt to evict him from his farm at Crawley, Sussex. Previously, he had halted the oncoming officers with a large fire extinguisher at the front door. When they went round to the back, Farmer Lee was waiting for them, armed with the machette. The fiery farmer chased a workman who tried to force the back door, left the house unguarded, and the bailiffs entered. Shortly afterwards, Mr. Lee left with his wife, Joyce, for an undisclosed destination somewhere in Sussex. The farmer was evicted by the New Towns Commission 'to protect the interest, health and amenity of local residents', because he kept pigs in breach of a tenancy agreement made in 1957. - Photo taken 26th July 1963. 固opFoto
